Oxford-University community is connected by 23 miles of
four-lane highway to Interstate 55, allowing quick travel to
Jackson and New Orleans, among other metropolitan locales.
Oxford encompasses about 9 square miles.
The community is served by the
University Airport. Oxford is about 80 miles southeast of Memphis,
TN, and 46 miles west of Tupelo, the major commercial hub of
Northeast Mississippi.
According to the 2000 Census, Oxford's
charm and Ole Miss' educational reputation have combined to drive
growth in the county. In the 1990s Oxford's population grew 17.7%.
The number of people in Lafayette County, according to the 2000
Census, totaled well over 38,000.
Chickasaw Indians once inhabited the area
now known as Lafayette
County. In 1835, three businessmen built a log cabin and opened a
general store atop a hill that was destined to become the Square.
Oxford was incorporated in 1837 and named after the city in England
that housed the great
British university. |
